Irish Garda officer and Euro banknotes next to an NCT fee notice at a checkpoint.

You rescheduled. They charged you anyway.

The notice period for changing an NCT appointment is five working days. Not five calendar days. Working days. That means if your test is on a Tuesday, you had to ring them by close of business the previous Monday. Miss that window by a single day and a €24 penalty goes on your account, collected next time you book.

A lot of people don’t know this. The backlog is making it worse — when you’re grabbing whatever slot shows up because Northpoint has nothing for two months, you’re more likely to end up with a date that doesn’t work. And then you’re more likely to cancel it too late.

The cleaner solution is to only book a slot you can actually keep. The NCT cancellation slot scanner watches the NCTS system in real time and alerts you the second something opens up at your preferred centre. That way you’re not panic-booking a Thursday and crossing your fingers your boss doesn’t call a meeting. Centres like the Northpoint test centre release cancellations daily — usually early morning.

The 2026 penalty fees, laid out

Reschedule or cancel a retestLess than 5 working days€16€56
No-show (didn’t cancel at all)None€24€84
Cancel or reschedule on time5+ working days€0€60 (standard)

The fee doesn’t come out of your account straight away. It sits on your reg number. Next time you go to book — or when you pay at the desk on test day — it’s added on. You can’t sidestep it by booking under a different email address; it’s tied to the car’s registration, not the user account.

Why Saturday doesn’t count

Here’s where people get caught. Say your test is on a Monday. Five working days before that Monday is the previous Monday. Not the Saturday two days prior — Saturday doesn’t count. Neither does Sunday. Neither does a bank holiday.

Check your confirmation email. The NCTS puts the cancellation cut-off date right at the bottom of it. If that date has passed, you’re inside the penalty window. At that point you’re usually better off keeping the slot, or — if you genuinely can’t go — asking someone else to bring the car. Any driver can present the vehicle, as long as they bring their own licence. The locations list has contact details for each centre if you need to ring ahead and flag the situation.

The system is, to be fair, fairly banjaxed. You’re penalised for not giving enough notice, while also being forced to book months ahead into dates that might not suit — because that’s all that’s available. Grand logic altogether.

Frequently asked questions

How much is the NCT re-test fee in 2026?

The re-test fee in 2026 is €40 if it needs lane equipment — brake test, emissions probe, headlamp rig. If it’s purely visual (a wiper blade, a reg plate light, that sort of thing) the re-test is free. You have 21 days from the original test date to come back at the lower rate. Miss that window and you’re paying for a full test again.

What happens if I miss my NCT appointment without telling them?

It’s treated as a no-show. €24 goes on your account for a periodic test, or €16 for a retest. That charge has to be cleared before your next booking goes through. You won’t be able to just ignore it and rebook.

Can I reschedule my NCT for free?

Yes, as long as you do it at least five working days before the test — excluding the day of the test, weekends, and public holidays. You can change it online through the NCTS portal or by phoning them. If you’re inside that five-day window, the €24 applies regardless of your reason for changing.
