NCT inspector in high-vis jacket raises hand to stop a grey Ford Focus at a dark green roller-shutter bay door on a wet Irish NCT centre forecourt

You queued, you waited — and then they sent you home

The inspector in the hi-vis jacket walks up to your window, glances at the dash, and that’s it. “Sorry, we can’t test her today — engine warning light is on.” Or worse: he pops the bonnet, checks the dipstick, and your slot is gone before you’ve even driven into the bay.

This is happening to real drivers every week. NCTS has confirmed that inspectors can and do refuse to carry out the test if engine oil is too low, coolant is below the minimum mark, or a dashboard warning light is active when the engine is running. You lose your slot. You go home. And if you can’t rebook with enough notice, the €24 late-change fee kicks in on top.

The fiercely annoying part? You could have topped up the oil in the car park in two minutes flat. But NCTS won’t give you that two minutes. It’s turn away, go home, rebook from scratch — and in some centres that means weeks of waiting.

If your test is coming up, the NCT cancellation slot scanner can find you an earlier appointment before any of this becomes a problem. But first — check the basics below. Takes two minutes. Saves €60.

Why they can legally turn you away

The NCT emissions test requires revving the engine hard — repeatedly — on the test lane. Running that sequence on low oil risks seizing the engine. Applus+, the company that operates NCTS centres, will not carry liability for destroying your car. So inspectors are authorised to refuse the test on the spot.

There is no formal appeal process for a pre-test refusal. No manager to fetch. You just have to go home, top up the oil or fix whatever the issue is, and rebook. Have a look at the NCT cancellation fees before you rebook — the rules on what you owe depend on how much notice you give.

The honest criticism here is this: a two-minute oil top-up in the car park would resolve the issue for most drivers who get turned away. NCTS has the car park, they have the time slot, and a €4 bottle of oil is sitting in every Spar on the road. But the policy is no exceptions. That’s not good enough for drivers who’ve taken a morning off work to be there.

The full two-minute pre-test checklist

Do this the morning before you drive to the centre. Takes less time than finding a parking spot.

Engine oil: Pull the dipstick, wipe it clean, reinsert fully, pull it out again. The oil film needs to sit between the MIN and MAX marks. If she’s sitting on or below MIN, top up before you leave the driveway. Don’t wait until you’re in the queue.

Coolant: Check the translucent expansion tank — usually a small plastic reservoir near the radiator. The level should be between the MIN and MAX lines when the engine is cold. If it’s low, it could mean a slow leak. Top it up, but if it keeps dropping, get it looked at — that’s a bigger problem than the NCT.

Dashboard warning lights: Start the engine and watch the dash for five seconds. If any light stays on — engine management, oil pressure, temperature, anything — don’t go. Fix the fault first. A banjaxed sensor can fail the test the same way a real fault does.

Tyre tread: Shove a 20 cent coin into the main tread groove. If you can see the full outer band of the coin, the tread is under 1.6mm and you’ll fail. That’s a €40 retest on top of your €60 test fee. Grand-looking tyres from the outside can still be too worn — check them properly.

All external bulbs: Walk around the car with the headlights on, then indicators, then brake lights. Get someone to stand behind the car while you press the pedal. A single dead brake light is an immediate NCT fail and costs you the retest fee.

All NCT test centres will run through a basic walkaround when you pull in — but that check happens at the bay door. If they spot low oil or a warning light there, the appointment is already over.

What the fees actually look like in 2026

A standard full NCT test costs €60. If you get turned away and can’t cancel with enough notice, you’re looking at a €24 no-show or late-change fee on top. Rebook, drive back, and you’re paying €60 again for a test you didn’t get the first time. That’s €84 for nothing — plus two mornings off work if you’re unlucky on the wait.

The Fonthill test centre and other busy Dublin centres have waits of six to eight weeks right now. Getting turned away and sitting at the back of that queue again is a fierce inconvenience that is entirely avoidable.

If you need a slot fast — whether it’s a first test or a retest — the NCT cancellation slot scanner monitors the booking system around the clock and alerts you when something opens up.

Frequently asked questions

Can the NCT refuse to test my car for low oil?

Yes. Inspectors are authorised to refuse testing if engine oil is below the minimum mark on the dipstick. The emissions test requires high engine revs, and running the engine on low oil risks seizing it. The refusal is made at the bay door — there is no on-site grace period to top up and try again.

Do I lose my fee if the NCT refuses to test my car?

Yes, you lose the slot. You do not get a refund for the appointment. If you can’t reschedule with sufficient notice, the €24 late-change or no-show fee applies on top of losing the original slot. Check the current policy on NCT cancellation fees before you rebook.

How much is the NCT cancellation fee in 2026?

€24 for periodic test no-shows or late changes. €16 for re-test no-shows. These fees apply when you cancel or miss the appointment without sufficient advance notice. The re-test itself costs €40 for a lane retest; a visual-only recheck is free.
