You Got the “Fail” Sticker. Here’s What You Might Not Have to Pay For.

The NCTS sends you home with a Vehicle Inspection Report. On it, every item you failed is listed. Most people see that list, panic, get the work done, and book a full re-test at €40.

Some of them didn’t need to pay a cent.

There’s a category of NCT re-test that’s completely free — the visual re-test. The problem is nobody tells you which failures qualify, so you either pay €40 unnecessarily, or you show up for a “free” re-test and get sent away because your item needed equipment testing.

Here’s the short version of what you actually need to know.

The Two Types of NCT Re-Test — And What Each Costs

Since January 2025, the NCT fees changed. The breakdown now is:

Re-Test TypeWhat It CoversFee (2026)Booking Required?
Full Re-TestAny item needing test equipment (brake tester, headlamp rig, emissions analyser)€40Yes
Visual Re-TestPurely visual items — no equipment needed€0 freeNo — walk in
New Full TestFailed outside the 30-day window€60Yes

The key number: 30 days. That’s your window from the original test date to rebook at the re-test rate. Miss it and you’re back to square one — a full €60 test, fresh queue, and your original fail report in the bin.

What Qualifies for a Free Visual Re-Test?

The NCTS definition is clear: a visual re-test covers items where the inspector just needs to look — no machine, no ramp, no equipment. If the fix can be confirmed with a glance, it’s visual.

The items that typically qualify as visual-only in Ireland:

  • Windscreen wipers — Streaking, splitting, or worn blades. Replace them (€15–25 in any motor factor), drive in, done.
  • Registration plates — Cracked, faded, or non-standard. New plates cost about €20 in any reg plate shop. Visual check, no equipment.
  • Exterior lighting bulbs — A blown rear fog light, brake light, or indicator bulb. Once the bulb is replaced, it’s a visual pass. The headlamp aim test is NOT visual — that’s a different beast entirely.
  • Wheel nuts — Missing or loose wheel nuts. Tighten or replace, walk in.
  • Horn — They press it, it honks, done. If yours was dead on test day and it’s now fixed, that’s visual.
  • Windscreen washers — No fluid or blocked jets. Top it up. Visual check.
  • Mirrors — Cracked or missing. Replace them. Visual.
  • Warning triangle / safety equipment (advisory only items in some cases)

Here’s the thing: on your Vehicle Inspection Report, the NCTS actually tells you the re-test type. Look for the re-test code beside each failed item. If the amount shown is €0.00, that item is a visual re-test — free, no booking, just walk in.

What Does NOT Qualify — Don’t Get This Wrong

This is where people get burned. They think “it’s only a small thing” and show up without a booking. The centre turns them away.

Items that look simple but require equipment:

  • Headlamp aim — Looks like a visual, but the centre uses a headlamp aim rig to measure beam angle. You need to book a full re-test for this. It’s the most common fail item nationally, and it catches a lot of people.
  • Brake efficiency — Brakemeter required. €40 re-test, book in advance.
  • Emissions / smoke test — Gas analyser or smoke meter. €40 and a booking.
  • Suspension and steering play — Ramp and shake plate needed.
  • Tyre tread depth — Tread depth gauge. Looks visual, but inspectors use a gauge for borderline cases. Usually treated as equipment.
  • OBD / engine management light — Diagnostic port scan required. Always a full re-test.

The fast rule: if you can see the fix yourself with your eyes, it’s probably visual. If your mechanic needed a tool to confirm it’s fixed, so does the NCTS inspector.

How to Walk In for a Free Visual Re-Test

No booking needed for visual items — that’s the whole point. But do this right:

  1. Check your VIR. The Vehicle Inspection Report from your test lists each failed item with a re-test fee beside it. If it says €0.00, that’s visual.
  2. Get the work done first. They won’t verify a promise — they need to see the fix.
  3. Go during off-peak hours. Mid-morning on a weekday is usually quieter. Avoid Monday mornings.
  4. Bring your VIR. The centre needs it to process the visual check.
  5. Go to the same centre. The visual re-test must be done at the same NCTS centre where you originally tested.

If your car has a mix of visual items and equipment items, you have two options: fix the visual items for free first, then book and pay €40 for the equipment re-test. Or fix everything and book one combined re-test at €40.

The 30-Day Deadline Is Not Forgiving

30 days. That’s it. After that, the re-test rate expires and you pay full price.

If your car also has equipment-based fails and you can’t get it booked within 30 days — because both Nenagh and Cahir are 8 weeks out, say — that’s where the NCT Bot cancellation scanner becomes important. It monitors every centre 24/7 and alerts you when a slot drops. You can often get a cancellation slot within a week, which keeps you well inside that 30-day window.

It’s particularly useful if you’ve failed on both visual and equipment items and you want to sort the visual stuff yourself first, then grab a fast re-test slot before the deadline hits.

FAQ: NCT Visual Re-Test 2026

What items qualify for a free NCT visual re-test in Ireland?

Items that can be confirmed by inspection alone — without any test equipment — qualify for a free visual re-test. Common examples include windscreen wipers, registration plates, exterior bulbs (not headlamp aim), wheel nuts, horn, washers, and mirrors. Your Vehicle Inspection Report will show €0.00 beside any item that qualifies.

Do I need to book a visual re-test at the NCT centre?

No. Visual re-tests are walk-in only at the original test centre. No booking is required and there is no charge. Bring your Vehicle Inspection Report and the car with the repair completed.

How much is the NCT re-test fee in 2026?

The NCT re-test fee in 2026 is €40 for any item that requires test equipment — brakes, emissions, headlamp aim, suspension. Visual-only items are free. If you miss the 30-day re-test window, you pay the full €60 test fee again. The fees increased in January 2025 from the previous €28 re-test rate.
